Alprazolam is a short-acting benzodiazepine indicated for the treatment of anxiety disorders and panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia. It enhances the inhibitory effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the central nervous system, producing anxiolytic, sedative, muscle relaxant, and anticonvulsant effects. The dosage should always be individualized according to the patient's clinical response and tolerance. Long-term use is generally not recommended because prolonged therapy may lead to tolerance, physical dependence, and withdrawal symptoms. Treatment should never be discontinued abruptly and should be tapered gradually under medical supervision.
Common adverse reactions include drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue, impaired coordination, and decreased alertness. Patients should avoid alcohol and other central nervous system depressants during treatment and should not drive or operate machinery until they know how the medication affects them.
